Outer Range (2022- )

The drama between two rival farmer families intensifies after a mysterious suggestion of time travel appears.

'Outer Range' is an intensely dramatic series peppered with elements of mystery and temporal paradoxes, similar to other well-known names like Twin Peaks and Dark. It has a rich and talented cast, full of well-known names, and a group of characters with a wonderful aura of morally gray, with the role of antagonist passed around from one episode to another. The mystery is multi-layered and enveloped in enough of many other poetic distractions to keep the appeal and the need to find out more at a high level.

Director:  Jennifer Getzinger and others
Production:  Amazon Studios
Creator:  Brian Watkins
Duration:  2 sezoaseasons of 8 and 7 episodes (1 hour each)
With: Josh Brolin, Tamara Podemski, Imogen Poots, Lily Taylor, Tom Pelphrey, Lewis Pullman, Will Patton, Shaun Sipos, Noah Reid

Desaparecer por completo / Disappear Completely (2022)

'Disappear Completely' is a horror with an interesting idea. The action takes place slowly, implacably and the ending does not surprise much.

The Northman (2022)

A Viking prince vows revenge for his father's death.

'The Northman' is an action film.. that's quite artistic. Stylized to the point of satiety, it manages to hold the viewer's attention, without forcing them to choose a side justice belongs to, merely just suggesting favorites. Well made, with a cast of surprising names, The Northman is a welcome choice.

Director:  Robert Eggers
With: Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe

Meet Cute (2022)

A young woman has the ability to travel in time and change her partner's past traumas.

'Meet Cute' has the premise of a romantic comedy, but becomes a psychological comedy through the prism of a sci-fi twist. No one can accuse the film of lack of originality. The comedy is light but present, the romance is a bit depressing, and the  sci-fi angle is interesting and makes possible a terrifying distortion of not respecting boundaries.

Director:  Alex Lehmann
With: Kaley Cuoco, Pete Davidson, Kevin Corrigan, Deborah S. Craig

Men (2022)

Harper rents a house in the country side to recover from the trauma of her ex-husband's death.

'Men' is at a first glance a dramatic story, full of trauma and painful memories and monotonous walks on forest paths and fields. Until it turns into something else, a kind of horror (which was expected) mixed in with morbid poetic analysis of the harmful effect of toxic male personalities. Although it is an often heard lesson, the film remains interesting and hypnotic through its quota of creepiness and its originality in execution.

Director:  Alex Garland
With: Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear, Paapa Essiedu, Gayle Rankin

The Bear (2022– )

Carmy is a talented chef who inherits his brother's restaurant and tries to raise its renown to an ideal level.

'The Bear' is an intense dramatic series (absurdly presented as a "comedy" by the various awards festivals), which candidly and realistically represents the different aspects of mental health problems, stress, perfectionism and ambition. With an admirable team of actors, the series is tense, frustrating, and addictive.

Director:  Christopher Storer and others

The Lost City (2022)

Bones And All (2022)

A young woman suffering from a violent genetic trait begins a journey of discovery through America.

'Bones And All' is a horror drama about self-knowledge and acceptance of the whole. Well acted, with some quite intense scenes, and a believable love story, elements that, viewed in isolation, seem rather important, and yet the film fails to convey convincingly the message that any of its characters has something that compensates for their inner monster.

Director:  Luca Guadagnino
With: Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Russell, Mark Rylance, Kendle Coffey, Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, Sean Bridgers

The Imperfects (2022)

Teenagers who participated in a gene therapy experiment wake up with powers that turn them into monsters.

'The Imperfects' is a sci-fi-ish series, focused on the idea of superpowers and heroes with big hearts, a big trope these days. Fresh, and with a quite funny dialogue, the series could have really taken off in a second season, but it didn't get a chance.

Strange World (2022)

The Clades family is a legendary family of explorers, but their attitudes and opinions are very different.

'Strange World' is an animated film full of adventures and imagination. It succeeds in taking the Disney style away from its overused templates in an attempt to cover more modern tastes and new ideas. The film did not have the success it deserved, unfortunately.

Directors:  Don Hall, Qui Nguyen

Talk To Me (2022)

A group of teenagers use a mummified hand to communicate with spirits recreationally.

'Talk To Me' is a horror film from the 'elevated horror' category that has become popular in recent years through the prism of A24 productions. While really technically and practically, everything looks perfect and of high quality, the story in this case was not treated with the same care and many of the actions of the characters are more invasive than they should be when it is clear what direction things will take and all that could change anything for the viewer is a twist ... that never comes.

Director:  Danny Philippou, Michael Philippou
With: Ari McCarthy, Hamish Phillips, Kit Erhart-Bruce, Sarah Brokensha

Gatlopp (2022)

A group of old friends gather for a reunion, where they choose to play a board game that seems to hide truths about them.

'Gatlopp' is a horror comedy, based on an idea similar to Jumanji. Interesting in terms of execution, the film doesn't try to lie about its originality, it doesn't take itself too seriously, it only wants to enhance its source idea, evolving it into another balanced and light genre, and surprisingly, both of its aspects work, both the comic and the horror.

Director:  Alberto Belli
With: Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jim Mahoney, Jon Bass, Sarunas J. Jackson

House Of Darkness (2022)

After they met in a bar, Hap brings Mina home, and his wishes seem they're about to come true when she invites him inside, in what appears to be a mansion.

'House Of Darkness' is what they call a textbook slowburn horror. With a theme worthy of the Hammer films of the 70s, the style is completely modernized, and the author takes a few risks when they choose a story progress based solely on dialogue and innuendos. Fresh and welcome in a creative environment that often seems to use only copycats.

Director:  Neil LaBute
With: Kate Bosworth, Justin Long, Gia Crovatin, Lucy Walters

Prey (2022)

Naru, part of the Comanche tribe, faces an earlier version of the Predator warrior.

'Prey' is the newest film in the Predator collection, with a new idea and execution, with the same formula, but buried deep in history. The characters are believable and easy to root for with a decent amount of emotional investment.

Director:  Dan Trachtenberg
With: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Stormee Kipp

Scream (2022)

Ghostface makes a killing comeback, on the 25th anniversary of the shocking events, despite the fact that the real culprits are no longer alive.

'Scream' is another iteration of the famous franchise, made 25-ish years after the first film. The plot is not the most original, and the twist is predictable, but the suspense is still believable and worth watching.

Director:  Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
With: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Marley Shelton, Jack Quaid
