The Night Of (2016)

A quiet young man spends a night full of drugs with a young woman who is found murdered the next day.

'The Night Of' is a dramatic mini-series, procedural in certain aspects, but which mainly focuses on the secondary effects of the incident, on a small and larger scale. Based on a British series, the HBO version has a life and personality of its own. Riz Ahmed and John Turturro are magnificent, and every episode is original and unpredictable.

Dexter: New Blood (2021–2022)

10 years after he faked his death, his son manages to find him.

'New Blood' is an event (and just a one off) season that continues the story of Dexter after the well-known finale of the series that ended in 2013. Made for the sake of the fans, it tried to fix what displeased many, but unfortunately it seems that the effect of this one was even more negative. The new story is not bad, but the spirit and humor of the original is missing. Dexter is uncharacteristically clumsy and inept just for the sake of creating twists and knife-edge scenes, and the ending... is not worth mentioning.

Director:  Marcos Siega, Sanford Bookstaver
Production:  Showtime
Creator:  David Greenwalt, Joss Whedon
Duration:  1 special season of 10 episodes (8 ore 49 minutes in total)

Maniac (2018)

Two strangers are drawn for different reasons to an experimental drug that promises to solve all their problems.

'Maniac' is a sci-fi drama with a very eclectic and imaginative content. The two main protagonists are excellent and very well suited for an association that makes so much sense. Hard to describe in general, Maniac must be experienced.

A Murder at the End of the World (2023)

An eccentric technological genius and his wife invite a group of people - exceptional in their field - to an isolated hotel in Iceland, where a murder takes place on the first night.

'A Murder at the End of the World' is a dramatic miniseries that follows a more unorthodox and very modern forensic investigation. With a group of actors that are well known but not too mainstream, and rarely seen on the screen, the series is ambitious from the first moment and follows a line of slow but determined development and is imbued with memory scenes that highlight the emotional weight of the facts the main character has to bear. With some imperfections in the script, especially related to the moments when some characters call others geniuses with no real proof, the geographical situation, and the subtle and skillfully quiet cinematography create an experience worth savoring, even with the week-long wait for each new episode.

Bodies (2023)

Four London detectives from 4 different periods find the same body, in the same place.

'Bodies' is a miniseries with an interesting concept. The plot and the explanation of the mystery are copied from the Doctor Who manual, but without the original's ability to make nonsense make sense and have appeal. However, the 4 perspectives of the same case offer an interesting opportunity to create relevant and believable characters that interact with what surrounds them in an interesting way and that is worth watching.

Director:  Marco Kreuzpaintner,    Haolu Wang
Production:  Netflix
Creator:  Paul Tomalin
Duration:  miniseries of 8 episodes (~55 minutes each)
With: Amaka Okafor, Kyle Soller, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Shira Haas, Stephen Graham, Greta Scacchi, Synnove Karlsen, George Parker, Michael Jibson

The Fall Of The House Of Usher (2023)

Roderick Usher talks to Auggie Dupin in his mother's house, telling him how he is guilty of the death of each of his children.

'The Fall Of The House Of Usher' is Mike Flanagan's latest (and last) miniseries adaptation in collaboration with Netflix. Based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe, the series majestically combines several of his stories into a modern homage to the original Gothic style. Reimagined in a very original way, TFOTHOU will easily satisfy the need for the gothic in the life of the viewer and will turn the direction of their thoughts towards analysis and search for real "wealth". Visually it is grandiose, the deaths and their associated parallel stories are never rushed or treated superficially, and without ever forgetting the main narrative thread, the audience is treated satisfactorily with parallel development and an appropriate ending even when it is expected.

Director:  Michael Fimognari, Mike Flanagan
Production:  Netflix
Creator:  Mike Flanagan
Duration:  1 season of 8 episodes (~1 hour each)
With: Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, T'Nia Miller, Zach Gilford, Willa Fitzgerald, Michael Trucco, Katie Parker, Ruth Codd, Mark Hamill, Kate Siegel, Carl Lumbly

Behind Her Eyes (2021)

Louise starts an adulterous relationship with her boss, but at the same time gets close to his wife, who has a mysterious past.

'Behind Her Eyes' is an adaptation of a mystery novel which adds a bit of the supernatural towards the end. The miniseries has a mysterious air, well maintained, with an intriguing plot, but somehow the explanation at the end feels like cheating to the viewer, because the mixture of supernatural elements was not expected in an obvious way in the initial attention grabbing. Well acted and interesting enough

Director:  Erik Richter Strand
Production:  Netflix
Creator:  Steve Lightfoot
Duration:  1 season/miniseries (4 hours 58 minutes in total)
With: Simona Brown, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Robert Aramayo

Chambers (2019)

A young high school girl begins to have personality changes and strange memories after a heart transplant operation.

'Chambers' is a miniseries with supernatural elements and a lot of drama. The idea is not the most original (although the ending is worth all the money), but the execution is full of patience, intriguing details, dramatic scenes about deep wounds and a well-nuanced mystery and it's all dragged out in the most appropriate way possible.

Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, Ti West and others
Production:  Netflix
Creator:  David Greenwalt, Joss Whedon
Duration:  one miniseries of 10 episodes (1 hour each)
With: Sivan Alyra Rose, Marcus LaVoi, Nicholas Galitzine, Kyanna Simone, Griffin Powell-Arcand, Lilliya Scarlett Reid, Uma Thurman, Tony Goldwyn, Lili Taylor

Au-delà des murs/Beyond The Walls (2016)

Lisa inherits a house from a stranger but soon discovers that its walls hide a mysterious labyrinth in which she gets lost.

"Au-delà des murs" is a film in 3 parts that touches several genres: drama, horror, sci-fi. Full of intrigue and mystery, the viewer is constantly in suspense, wonder and in the middle of a storm of questions. Not all are answered, and it's not a disappointing fact either, but in the end things have a logical circular dependency that fully satisfies the romantics in us.

Duration:  1 miniseries of 3 episodes (2 hours and 36 minutes in total)

The Devil's Hour (2022– )

A woman wakes up every night at 3:33, with memories of events that never happened.

'The Devil's Hour' is a psychological thriller with sci-fi and maybe even horror elements. Excellently done, it stretches over six meticulously thought out parts, without depending on the quality of the final episode to validate its overall value, with the ending maybe not being as impressive as the expectations make it, but it comes very close. The characters are well drawn, multidimensional in a more than sufficient way, and it includes impressive artistry from the main characters' actors, especially the child actor. A miniseries that will give you the impression of a movie, not to be missed!

Director:  Johnny Allan, Isabelle Sieb
Production:  Amazon Studios, Hartswood Films
Creator:  Tom Moran
Duration:  1 season in 6 parts (1 hour each)
With: Jessica Raine, Peter Capaldi, Nikesh Patel, Benjamin Chivers, Phil Dunsters

The Stand (2020–2021)

After an epidemic has killed the majority of the population, a few "chosen" begin to receive visions that give a mystical meaning to the events.

'The Stand' is a new adaptation of Stephen King's novel, the second one after the one from 1994. In terms of genre, it belongs to the horror style, with a slow pace and many religious elements. With a cast full of well-known names, this series is decent, but does not surpass the previous one and does not remain in memory as anything special. In addition, the last episode is added as a filler, without explanation, after all the interesting developments have been revealed.

Director:  Josh Boone  and others
Production:  CBS
Creator:  Josh Boone, Benjamin Cavell
Duration:  miniseries of 1 season of 9 episodes (8 hours 30 minutes in total)

Echoes (2022)

Leni and Gina have always shared everything as twins, but when one of them disappears, mysterious secrets are revealed.

"Echoes" is a dramatic miniseries, with a plot worthy of a soap opera. It starts out mysterious and strong, but the charm wears off pretty quickly and the events become predictable enough that you keep watching just for the satisfaction of being right.

Creator:  Vanessa Gazy
Duration:  miniseries of 1 seasons with 7 episodes (5 hours 26 minutes in total)

Stay Close (2021)

Events from the past have new echoes in the present, affecting the lives of a detective, a housewife and a photographer.

'Stay Close' is a miniseries based on a popular thriller novel, written by Harlan Coben. It has an intriguing beginning, a strong suggestion of something intense and deep at the root of all the mysteries, but the unfolding of events reveals only disappointing conclusions and many elements are used only for sensational effect, taking advantage of the assumed naivety and impressionability of the audience.

Channel Zero Season 1 - "Candle Cove" (2016)

A child psychologist returns to his hometown where sinister childhood memories unearth supernatural dangers.

'Channel Zero' is an anthological horror series made by Sify, each season having its own independent story. Candle Cove is the first season and it's a mixed result. It starts promisingly and seriously, unsure at first of the supernatural influence that becomes more and more prominent with each episode. The rhythm is slow from the beginning, a fact that initially helps the suspense and the mystery, but when it becomes a constant feature, it gives the more and more obvious impression of a flaw. The style of the story and the involvement of the children are often reminiscent of the kind of storytelling specific to Stephen King.

Director:  Craig William Macneill and others
Production:  Sify
Creator:  Nick Antosca
Duration:  4 seasons of 6 episodes (44 minutes each)

Bridgerton Season 2 (2022)

It's Anthony's - the eldest brother - turn to find a life partner, and he finds one where he least expects it.

Season two follows on with the style of the first one to the delight of the fans, but with less perfection of dialogue and action and more awkwardness and cringiness in scenes that are deemed subtle, despite the charm of the main focus couple, even with Anthony - the most unbearable character in the first season - as one of its halves.

Director:  Tom Verica and others
Production:  Netflix
Creator:  Chris Van Dusen
Duration:  season 2 of 8 episodes (~60 minutes each)
With: Simone Ashley, Phoebe Dynevor, Claudia Jessie, Luke Thompson, Ruth Gemmell, Jonathan Bailey, Polly Walker, Adjoa Andoh, Julie Andrews

Pieces of Her (2022– )

A young woman, uncertain about her life choices, suddenly finds herself in a completely unknown world on the day her mother defends her from an armed assailant in a surprising manner.

'Pieces Of Her' is a thriller miniseries, with a strong plot and more or less charismatic and relatable main characters. The first 4 episodes fills the viewer with enough tension and intrigue to keep curiosity at an intense and constant level, but as the details begin to be revealed, the mystery is less impressive and the overall effect is much diluted, with a final twist that can be seen from a great distance.

Duration:  1 season of 8 episodes (52 minutes each)
With: Toni Collette, Bella Heathcote, Jessica Barden, Joe Dempsie, David Wenham, Terry O'Quinn
