Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

A group of teenagers try to survive during a zombie apocalypse.

'Anna and the Apocalypse' is a horror musical. Full of music that's so typical of the genre, which just springs up at any moment, the film is faithful to its horror roots, both in terms of the quantity of gore and the weak amount of a Hollywood ending. Interesting and original.

Director:  John McPhail
With: Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Sarah Swire, Christopher Leveaux

Rating: 7.4/10

Enchanted (2007)

Giselle is punished by the evil queen and sent away from Andalusia, an animated world, to the real world, New York.

'Enchanted' is a Disney film that combines the magic of animation and the usual clichés with current reality, in a very original, ironic way, not shying away from laughing at itself and manage to find a very engaging and fulfilling middle ground, full of music and a joyous time.

Director:  Kevin Lima
With: Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Susan Sarandon, Timothy Spall, Idina Menzel, Julie Andrews

Rating: 9/10

Pitch Perfect (2012)

Beca, passionate about DJ-ing, joins the Bellas group and participates in competitions between universities.

'Pitch Perfect' is a musical comedy with teenagers. It's become a series in the meantime, and the film is very popular and offers light entertaining with very well done musical moments. In terms of a story though, there's nothing special about it, it's quite mundane and derivative.

Director:  Jason Moore
With: Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Anna Camp, Adam Devine

Rating: 6/10

La La Land (2016)

A pianist and an actress who are trying their luck in the over-busy workforce of Los Angeles fall in love and try to reconcile their individual aspirations.

'La La Land' is a drama film in the form of a musical. Slight moments of comedy occur from time to time but drama remains its basis. It's a beautiful film that challenges the audience with nostalgia for the classic, art, individuality, love and partial codependency and losing. And good music, very elegantly and skillfully choreographed by a young director who has already made waves (with Whiplash as director/screenwriter and many non-musicals as screenwriter).

Director:  Damien Chazelle
With: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Rosemarie DeWitt, J.K. Simmons

Rating: 9/10

Moulin Rouge! (2000)

A bohemian poet from the end of the 19th century manages to become the screenwriter for a play put together by the famous Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with the establishment's star at the same time as the main investor of the project.

'Moulin Rouge' is a neverending love story in the form of a highly acclaimed musical inspired by Alexandre Dumas's 'La Dame aux Camélias'. Baz Luhrmann uses intensely colorful and almost ostentatiously stylized sceneries, original music interspersed with fragments of famous cult songs, a simple script but very much evoking of the same bohemian spirit that is much talked about in the film in a most inspiring way and he has attracted and still attracts the hearts of many romantics, whether they are fans of musicals or not.

Director:  Baz Luhrmann
With: Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Lequizamo, Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh, Jacek Koman, Kerry Walker, David Wenham, Kylie Minogue, Ozzy Osbourne
