The Power of the Dog (2021)

Phil is an authoritarian and charismatic farmer who reacts harshly and intimidatingly when his brother marries and brings his wife to the farm with her son.

'The Power Of The Dog' is a true drama in a western context and a long-awaited delight - that is the delight of a film directed by Jane Campion after many quieter years (Top Of The Lake is the only other title from her in the last 12 years). Like other productions in her repertoire, this film is full of originality and unexpected narrative lines, as well as a surprising ending. Her slow style of discovery, full of contrasting emotions, is just as exciting, and the ending is not disappointing in this case either, although for reasons other than a fan of 'The Piano' would expect.

Benedict Cumberbatch might be worth mentioning for his incredible interpretation, but he would be unfairly put ahead when both Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee are outstanding too.

Top of the lake (2013-)

Un detectiv cu probleme personale își folosește meseria ca evadare, aceasta oferindu-i singurul context în care poate acționa și gândi cu o obiectivitate perfectă. Problemele se ridică la suprafață în schimb în momentul când cele două lumi se intersectează. 

Intens și puțin dark, seria aceasta prezintă un subiect popular (investigații polițiste) într-o cultură mai puțin des exploatată, și anume cultura australiană și neozeelandeză. Sub bagheta minunatei Jane Campion (unul din regizorii mei preferați, autoarea lui The Piano), și cu câteva cameo binevenite de la actrițe mari ca Holly Hunter și Nicole Kidman (ambele minunate și expresive și interesante), acest film îi oferă talentatei Elizabeth Moss (o știți din Mad Men și The Handmaid's Tale) ocazia să strălucească portretizând pe tăcuta Robin. 

Uneori încet, dar fără să plictisească, uimește prin credibilitate și originalitate. Totul pare să se desfășoare firesc, personajele sunt mereu într-un mediu veridic și natura nu e niciodată departe.

Nu va fi ușor de urmărit, vă avertizez. Deoarece primul sezon a fost în 2013 iar al doilea în 2017 și nu se știu detalii despre următorul.
