Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)

In a post-apocalyptic future, an imprisoned criminal is tasked with bringing back the granddaughter of a local chieftain who seems to represent the lawful and unlawful local power.

'Prisoners of the Ghostland' is a film that is hard to define. Probably the closest it could be described as is an absurdist post-apocalyptic thriller. Nicholas Cage is the typical hero played in many other titles (with slightly more intense messianic traits), and Sofia Boutella is the missing girl, but the rest is meaningless madness, possibly with some failed attempts at clever symbolism (the mixture of Oriental and the West represented by the wild west - perhaps representing the cultural pollution coming from the West and such other ideas). Watchable, but pointless.

Bringing Out The Dead (1999)

A paramedic who's severely affected by exhaustion hardly makes it through three full days of his job.

'Bringing Out The Dead' is an atypical, quite experimental film, directed by a Martin Scorsese who manages to control an extremely mixed, turbulent and dramatic project, very close to real life, with people suffering from almost familiar, almost common problems. Nicholas Cage is - as usual - wonderful in the role of the paramedic who barely manages to keep his mental balance in check, under the burden of exhaustion and post-traumatic stress caused by the death of a patient.

Color Out of Space (2019)

Viata unei familii ce traieste la o ferma izolata trece prin schimbari apocaliptice dupa aterizarea unui meteorit intrigant.

Un film SF netraditional, cu elemente comune cu un alt clasic ca The Thing, Colour Out Of Space se bazeaza pe o povestire scrisa de H.P. Lovecraft. Foloseste efecte vizuale foarte bogate si impresionante ce adancesc efectul artistic asupra privitorului, cu o simbolistica interesanta asociata culorii preponderente si anume movul, obtinut din rosu si albastru in anumite circumstante, cele doua culori fiind asociate in general cu binele si raul, movul sugerand lipsa de substrat malefic sau chiar opus, concepte necunoscute fortei extraterestre din film. Lipsit de logica in anumite momente, filmul este totusi impresionant, jocul actorilor este de prima mana (Nicolas Cage aminteste de rolul sau din Vampire's Kiss) si este placut de vizionat.

Mandy (2018)

Viața simplă, izolată și idilică a unui cuplu este dată peste cap de atacul brutal al unui cult religios. 

Acest film este exact cum mi-aș imagina un film regizat de David Lynch, scris în colaborare de Robert Rodriguez si Quentin Tarantino, in anii '80.

Cu un amestec de stiluri, nu va fi pe placul multora. Filmat cu o cameră in stilul anilor '80, cu o temă foarte prolifică tot atunci (slasher/revenge), dar întretaiat cu efecte artistice audio-vizuale foarte necaracteristice genului, captează aproape pe neștiute printr-o abundență de momente apăsătoare fie prin încărcătura emoțională fie prin acțiuni șocante.

Toți protagoniștii sunt superbi în interpretarea lor în frunte cu subtila Andrea Riseborough. 

Pe Linus Roache l-ați mai văzut în Vikings și The Wings of The Dove, pe Andrea în Birdman, Black Mirror și Welcome To The Punch. Richard Brake e The Night King și Bill Duke poate fi văzut adesea în filmele lui John Carpenter.
